The glory of the lip dub is that like many successful YouTube videos, it doesn’t require talent. All you need is commitment — and a boss who frequently goes out of town — and you too could make one of these viral hits. Just try to choose better songs.
You might think that the French might not even bother with this trend, or if they did, it would be impossibly chic, all Serge Gainsbourg and dim lighting and Chanel shifts. But lip dubs apparently unite us all, and these teens are just as goofy and hammy as everyone else.
Much of this video’s hilarity stems from its homey, DIY feel; I can actually imagine myself and my office mates doing this. Because, like them, we often show striking dedication to non-work activities. And we are seriously awesome chair-dancers.
The random costumes, the celebration of gin, the fact that it makes us think of Degrassi – there are a lot of things to like in this video from the aggressively cheery University of Quebec students. The Black Eyed Peas song they set it to is…not one of them.
We don’t know what’s more impressive – that they managed to coordinate well more than 100 students into this single-shot lip-dub, or that these kids seem so much more attractive than everyone we went to college with.
You think pulling off one of these is hard? Try doing it backwards, like the students and teachers of this almost bizarrely committed high school.

This video is a “revenge of the teachers” scenario, where the faculty of a school sing “We’re Not Going to Take It” to the pesky, text-message-sending, authority-defying student body. The video’s military precision is organized by a man named “Coach Willis,” who sounds like the sort of track-suit wearing disciplinarian responsible for my total lack of participation in high school sports.
What’s most impressive about this video from the Warsaw School of Economics is the sheer number of people willing to participate. That, and the cameo appearance by a shark.
Some say that this is lip-dub video that started it all. Other people say, “That office is all full of bearded youths, how could they possibly run a company?” Unless it’s a lip-dub company.
You know you’ve watched too much Glee when anything sung or performed by actual high school kids is a serious disappointment. Like this high school lip-dub of “Party in the USA.” It’s pretty good, but it would have been a lot better if they’d hired attractive twenty-five-year olds to perform it for them.
Okay, it’s official: universities in Europe no longer teach classes. All of their time is apparently spent on lip dubs. Sure, it’s all fun and games now, but they won’t be smiling when they graduate and their only skill is being able to walk backwards and move their mouths at the same time.
