Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar is adapting his 1988 international hit film Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown into an English language series. Huh. This movie, if you've never seen it, is fantastic - and Almodovar's heavy involvement calms our fears that TV will screw it up...
Fox TV Studios is developing the English-language hourlong project and has tapped Mimi Schmir to pen the pilot script. Almodovar and Schmir are exec producing.
The movie, starring Carmen Maura and featuring Antonio Banderas, was inspired by 1950s Hollywood comedies. Featuring Almodovar's trademark rapid-fire dialogue and fast-paced action, it chronicles a two-day period in the life of a voice actress who has been abandoned by her lover and gets in a series of comedic situations while frantically trying to track him down.
The movie is a fast-paced, over the top comedy heavy on drama - think Desperate Housewives, but way funnier and better. It's very different from Almodovar's (also great) recent work - more serious melodramas with complex plots. Women On The Verge is also the film that got the world talking about sexy young Antonio Banderas. Check it out....
