This is what happens when two old faces reminisce about the past.
Sally Albright and Harry Burns' real life counterparts, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, reunited last night to celebrate When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner at the 41st Film Society of Lincoln Center's Chaplin Award. This reunion was 25 years in the making for Harry and Sally of diner booth orgasm fame, and the actors speculated what their characters would be up to now.
They agreed that Harry's still a political consultant, probably working for Mayor Bill de Blasio and added that Harry's most likely the reason behind de Blasio's efforts to rid New York of horse drawn carriages. Crystal joked that Harry probably came into the office one morning saying, "I just stepped in the biggest pile of horse shit. Can you do something about this?"
Knowing Harry, I can see him developing an empty, verbose theory about how getting shit on you — horses, dogs, or pidgeon poo specifically — is only called good luck by the worst, unlucky people because they want to lie to themselves about their horrible day and need to cope with the smell, the feeling, and the squish as nothing can get worse after stepping in horse shit. De Blasio probably found this argument convincing or wanted Harry to just stop talking.
Meanwhile, I figure that Sally now works as a freelancer and still takes half an hour to order a sandwich and always gets the chef salad with the balsamic vinegar and oil on the side. "On the side" is still a big thing for her. It's actually her user name on Yelp, where she writes overwrought complaints about how different restaurants have gotten her convoluted orders wrong.
The couple's still happily married and live on the Upper West Side. They brunch at Sarabeth's, binge watch House of Cards on Netflix, and wait in line for Cronuts because Sally wants to try it, though Harry sees no point in waiting in line for a dessert if you can eat it in five bites. Ever since Sally's openly fake orgasm at Katz's Deli, they always get free roast beef sandwiches. And, for a visualization, here's Harry and Sally today.
