Is this the most Internet thing that has ever happened?
What are the most inescapable things on the Internet in February 2014? Doge, cryptocurrency, and porn (which is never not trending). In a story that combines all three, Australian porn star Angela White is in the process of setting up a payment system on her website that will enable her to accept Dogecoin, the only form of internet money based on the juggernaut shiba inu meme.
White, a Melboune-based AVN award-nominated porn star and activist, told the Washington Examiner, “I believe cryptocurrencies may be the future of online purchases, especially for adult-related products where consumers are often concerned about anonymity.” She said she chose Dogecoin over more prominent cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, because of the community around Dogecoin, or as she put it in Doge-speak, "Much fun. Such community. Wow." She turned to the Dogecoin subreddit for help setting up a payment system, where hundreds of Redditors/Dogecoin enthusiasts chimed in with jokes and assistance, and soon White was on her way to getting paid via Dogecoin.
Dogecoin, where the "Doge" is pronounced like Homer Simpson's catchphrase "D'oh" with a hard "g" on the end, is a cryptocurrency that is mostly used for user-to-user tipping in web transactions. For example, on the subreddit /girlsgonedogecoin, women trade racy photos for Dogecoin tips. But Angela White is the first professional porn star to accept Dogecoin. So despite its silly presentation, Dogecoin is beginning to be taken seriously as an alternative, anonymous means to purchasing porn.
