Nine Hand-Drawn Maps of New York City that Will Break Your Heart

Nine stories of love, sex, sex work, and loss told through personal illustrated maps of Manhattan

Becky Cooper distributed maps of Manhattan to random New Yorkers and asked them to draw their experience of the island. What were their highlights, their own personal landmarks? The result is Mapping Manhattan: A Love (and Sometimes Hate) Story in Maps by 75 New Yorkers, a glimpse into the emotional connection between memories and place. We live in such a vast city, one that encompasses such a huge range of experiences, dreams, joys, and disappointments.

The maps are as varied as New Yorkers themselves. Some are funny, some sad, and many deal with the trajectories of love affairs and sexual exploration in some form. From the seriousness of sexual assault to the joys of marriage and discovering the vibrant and inclusive sexual environment of New York, this book offers a unique view into how we live and love. We've collected a few of our favorites tales here.
