The Hooksexup Mixtape With Goldfrapp

Alison Goldfrapp soundtracks a romantic road trip through France.

by Jeremy Glass

The Hooksexup Mixtape is a Hooksexup feature in which we ask actors and musicians to celebrate the hallowed art of the mixtape. The playlist is a casual swap between friends, but a mixtape is an expression of something deeper, given to someone you might like to get to know... better. You can't always tell someone how you feel, but chances are you know between ten and fourteen songs that say it better than you ever could.

Goldfrapp's new compilation is The Singles, collecting the singles from their five studio albums. Pitchfork calls it "a tight hour of their finest material sequenced like a dynamic, eclectic pop album." Check it out here. We asked Alison Goldfrapp to pick some romantic songs for us, and she did not disappoint.

1. Air, "Venus"

"Venus" is just a cool song. It's as simple as that. I love the piano instrumental in the middle of it. It's got a sort of lovey atmosphere around it.

2. Charlotte Gainsbourg, "Le Chat Du Cafe Des Artistes"

I love the production on this, and the clash of the strident piano against her very fragile voice — it's kind of sexy.

3. Dusty Springfield, "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore"

"I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore" is just such a beautiful song, and Dusty Springfield's voice is so lovely — it's just got a real vibe about it. The whole thing feels like it captures a moment. I don't know how to explain it, but there's a strong feeling around it that's beautiful and quite raw sounding.

4. The xx, "Crystalised"

I'm always sort of drawn to things that have got a sort of sweet but melancholy sound to them, I think. And I like the combination of the male and female voices on this song. It's just got a great feel to it.

5. David Bowie, "Oh! You Pretty Things"

This song is fun. You could dance around the kitchen to it. You can dance in front of the mirror, too. Sort of slovenly rock.

6. Francoise Hardy, "Bati Mon Nid"

I love Francoise Hardy. This is quite a slushy, sentimental, romantic song. It would probably make some people cringe, but I love it.

7. Joy Division, "Atmosphere"

I love this tune. It's kind of bleak, but romantic — which is what Joy Division are, isn't it? Bleak and romantic. Right up my street.

8. Elbow, "Mirrorball"

I think "Mirrorball" is a really beautiful song. I think his voice sounds absolutely gorgeous. Again, it's kind of romantic and it's kind of got this sort of sleepy feel about it.

9. Bon Iver, "Holocene"

I just love the sound and the feel and the production on "Holocene."

10. Nancy Sinatra, "Sugar Town"

A bit of light entertainment here. It's just so ridiculous — good for when I'm sitting and I just need something to feel completely airheaded. "Sugar Town" is the answer. I don't know if it'd work for me and a guy, though.

11. Nico, "The Fairest of Seasons"

It's kind of silly, kind of romantic, but strange. It's psychedelic, but folky. And I love the sound of Nico's voice.

12. Astrud Gilberto, "The Girl From Ipanema"

I think I just want the person getting the mixtape to have some fun listening to this. Hopefully, it'll take them on a little journey. I think it's a good road trip song. Actually, all of these songs would work for a romantic road trip through France. There's something so lovely about making somebody a mixtape. It's nice, isn't it?
