Fall in love with Matthew Perry as he rips writers claiming women "suddenly became funny"
By Kristin HuntMay 8th, 2012, 12:30 amComments (22)Since Bridesmaids' crazy success, a lot of those inane "women aren't funny" articles have thankfully disappeared off the face of the internet. But unfortunately, they seem to have disappeared with the implication that women only got hilarious last year when Melissa McCarthy wore a golf hat. Matthew Perry, noted sarcastic dreamboat, was on hand at the Comedy Awards to tell people just how stupid that idea is.
Perry's takedown aired on Sunday night during Comedy Central's second annual awards show. Here's the entire speech:
"This year we saw many hilarious performances by women, as well as many idiotic articles from men about how women suddenly became funny. Yes, imagine how great The Mary Tyler Moore Show would've been had Mary, Betty White, Cloris Leachman, and Valerie Harper actually been funny. If only Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Gilda Radner, or Julia Louis-Dreyfus had been able to get a laugh. I guess what I'm saying is this wasn't the year women became funny; this was the year men finally pulled their heads out of their asses."
Really, all that's missing is a Madeline Kahn shout-out and a mic drop. Well played, good sir. I'm pretty sure everyone I know already loves you, but man, could you be any more awesome?
And with that Friends reference, I believe I'm officially allowed to retire.

Well, spoken, Mr. Perry—those words put in your mouth by a backstage male comedy writer.
I believe Mr. Norm McDonald nicely summed up this issue when he said: “Sarah Silverman! Who's funnier than her—except guys?”
Norm then further clarified: “Well, you know when you're in high school, and you're in the hallway, and you see a whole bunch of people gathered around somebody and everybody's laughing? Whenever you'd walk over and see who was at the center of it being so funny—it was always a chick, wasn't it?”
In fairness, Mr. McDonald has also noted: "I think Roseanne is the funniest woman who ever lived—which makes her the first funny woman who ever lived."
Norm McDonald is completely wrong as usual. Except about Sarah Silverman.
Sarah Silverman is a ponderous bore.
He just said that to get laid.
Brilliant deduction! I too am sure that Matthew Perry, like all famous, attractive, rich men, must pander to women in order to get laid.
Riiiight.
Spot on, Nope. Too funny.
Haters gonna hate.
I missed the friend reference. Help, anybody?
"I'm pretty sure everyone I know already loves you, but man, could you BE any more awesome?"
Chandler always talks like that in Friends: "Could that BE more ?"
1. Women aren't funny.
2. Mathew Perry was never funny.
3. Anyone who watched "Friends" knows nothing about funny.
Your mom is pretty funny.......smelling
Well, since she's been dead for three years I'd imagine that'd be the case.
1. Yes, they are.
2. Yep, he was and still is.
3. Millions of people disagree.
Asserting that "Friends" was funny completely negates your opinions.
To you. And as I actually said, millions of people disagree with you. But I guess you, who is clearly a god-in-your-own-mind, disagree and therefore we should all bow down.
You have zero logic in your comments. You wrote in another article that the fact that millions of people listened to Rush L gave him credibility. Now you want to assert that just because you didn't find Friends funny it wasn't despite it's millions of viewers. Hypocrisy and lack of logic. As usual.
YEs to everything you said, smp.
Please, PLEASE, tell me it ain't so. Our lovable troll Greg showing a distinct lack of his much-vaunted "intellectual consistency"? No. No, I'm sorry, I just simply refuse to believe it because, well, he told us he was intellectually consistent so, so many times, that must make it true, right?
Ah Nope, you're a cruel one for crushing his dreams of intellectual consistency when he has so few other tools at his disposal. Where is the liberal bleeding heart for the poor Greg-troll? So spiritually inconsistent of you, you hard, cruel, liberal!
BUT THE PEW RESEARCH POLL SAID --
@smp: Well said and true.
@PLEASE: Hilarious. You've shown me what true compassion is and taught me to feel for the poor Greg-troll, hoisted by his own intellectually inconsistent petard. So sad.
@nope: Yep, it had to be said.
...and Greg will never have a meaningful relationship with any woman, since he decides to lump them into one category of "unfunny". Good luck you joyless soul.
Posted when stoned, eh?
wait, so you're going to retire now?
fantastic.
Now you say something
