Amy Winehouse found dead in her London apartment

Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her London apartment at the age of twenty-seven, several sources are reporting. After the "Rehab" singer's long and very public struggles with substance abuse, some sources are reporting the cause of death as a drug overdose, though police are currently treating her passing as "unexplained."

Winehouse had recently tried to stage a series of comeback concerts, but after she gave a disastrous performance in Belgrade, her management released the following statement: "Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

Whatever the circumstances, the world has lost a truly talented musician whose music touched countless people (and has also gotten me through every breakup I've ever had). RIP Amy; you will be missed.

Even if you personally didn't care for her, you can accept that she and her music meant a lot to many. In the wake of her death, how about you let people mourn instead of attacking her lifestyle. Condemning a person hours after her death is worse than kicking someone when he or she's down.

If you cannot have compassion how about some silence for a moment so, just for a minute, people can think you're being a decent person.

I hope no one you lose is dogged like this and so soon after.

Have some compassion, asshat. No one but a douche would use sarcasm at a death.

Jul 24 11 - 10:23pm
huh?

Not to be all serious, which can be douchey in and of itself on a entertainment blog, but people cope with death in all sorts of manners, including humor and sarcasm. Not that the above commenter was coping as he/she/it probably did not know Ms. Winehouse. For that same reason their called for compassion would be rather moot unless the people here are looking for some sort of solace. And in which case, tough shit.

I didn't particularly like her music, though I gather that's a minority view, but I'm sorry for such an obviously troubled young woman. I wish the help she kept seeking had succeeded.

You make is sound like those who helped failed.

You're dealing with an addict, the only person who can help an addict is the addict themselves.

She sought help, got help, and continued on in her self destructive ways.

Yes a waste of a talented life but not unexpected.

No, I'm not blaming the people who tried to help her. She sought help. The help (attempts at rehab and, I assume, other psychological interventions) did not succeed -- she apparently overdosed on drugs.

poor kid. i don't blame her for sinking into addiction; she seemed too fragile and introspective to ever be happy in the hard, unforgiving glare of the spotlight. like how lennon went crazy when the critics started ripping him up in the seventies. i'm just guessing. RIP.

Stop making excuses for her. Most people have much more difficult lives and don't self-destruct. Next time you're tempted to feel sorry for a celebrity under the "unforgiving glare of the spotlight," send some money to Oxfam to help buy a family a goat or a school some books.

Just because some people have difficult lives and don't self-destruct, doesn't mean that it's not a very real issue for others. I personally never cared for her music, but can you really not hold back your pessimism towards somebody HOURS after they DIE?

20,000 children die of hunger world-wide each day, but we're all here getting misty and sympathetic over the most predictable OD death ever. It's not that I have no sympathy for her, but the disproportional sympathy we give to such people always strikes me as a little bit offensive.

Jul 24 11 - 10:25pm
huh?

What about having sympathy for an obviously troubled and ill individual means you cannot also have sympathy for the starving children? Do I have to pick one? This is an article about who...? So what did you expect?

I was rooting hard for her comeback, it's so sad to hear she wasn't able to pull through.
RIP, Amy.

P.S: Hooksexup, it's awfully ironic and disheartening to see "Amy Winehouse Death Watch Back On" under your "Find More" links. If you could remove that somehow, that'd be best.

No, I rarely if ever read my own posts. However, I'd memorize them and scribe them onto pillowcases with sharp graphite shards before I'd bother reading comments from LiquidCourage.

I think maybe one of the saddest things to me about this is her overall legacy, should there be one, will be about her tabloid self and not her music. I think this is due to both the entertainment media being what it is today and the music industry (mainstream) not truly embracing a lot of different talent. I turn on the radio in my area and at least 5 of the stations (large market BTW) have the same playlist. Yes, if you want different music there are options, but not in mainstream accessible by all radio/media.

Was she 27 like Joplin, Hendrix, Kobain, et al? Sure, but those are people who are remembered for their music and talent first and foremost which is why we still see tribute paid to those artists. Are they everyone's cup of tea? Of course not, that is impossible. But they are people who had an impact on music, as did Amy Winehouse (though certainly how much is debatable, just as it is whether or not she was talented). But will people talk about her music or her crawling around begging for drinks first? That's not to place blame for that on the media; certainly her addiction was her responsibility and maybe to an extent there are others to blame (we do not know; it is not uncommon for people to enable or take advantage of an addict and the addiction should not excuse their behavior).

I don't know...I just think it's sad that people who are autotuned will probably end up being remembered as more a musician than someone who actually had some pipes. (Ok, pipes probably not the best choice of words...)

This custom of lavishing superlatives when a death occurs is nauseating. I'm sorry for the girl, addiction is awful and I don't get why so many people still get sucked into it with all the education that is available. I just don't see how rewarding her with accolades as a world class talent is going to make anything better. Does it help people cope? I just don't get it. She has an average singing voice and she copied her act completely from early 60s American artists. She really didn't bring much of anything and praising her just lowers the bar for the next fatally self-absorbed drug addled musician, actor, model etc..
