The Office may continue on with an all-new cast

It looks highly likely that at the end of the current season of The Office, a good portion of the cast will be flying the coop. James Spader has already announced his decision to leave. Mindy Kaling is working on a comedy series for Fox. Rainn Wilson is working on the Dwight Schrute spin-off. (A terrible idea, it should go without saying.) Big names like John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Jenna Fischer, and BJ Novak are all out of their contracts. Given the show's long run, the drop in quality that many fans have complained about, and a possible major actor exodus, the producers and NBC are probably just going to let this show die, right?

Wrong! It sounds insane, but executive producer Greg Daniels is in talks with the network to essentially reboot the show, bringing in an all new cast with a few holdovers from the current era. The likelihood of this plan depends on a lot of things: those contract negotiations, the career plans of the main cast, and the fate of NBC's crop of new comedy series. A source from the show told TV Guide, "It's likely to be written for some of the characters as a last year. But if a couple new characters are introduced or other story ideas emerge, you just never know."

Yes, because new characters like that one girl with the hair or the guy, you know, that guy with the face, have become so beloved. Can a show not end with some dignity, Daniels? (And are you really making that much money from The Office, NBC?) Must it stumble forward like some awful Frankenstein's monster, just sticking on new parts until it's all new part? Yes, people were sad when the British original ended after only two seasons, and I bet many people thought the characters had more stories to tell, but at least it didn't stick around long enough for people to actually hate Tim and Dawn. Make a different show — I'm sure you have it in you! Or even adapt another British one. But it is time to euthanize The Office. For its own good, I assure you.

If Daniels can bypass the Scrubs Effect, he may be in for some sort of Nobel Prize.
