Shadow Play

These photos by the California-based photographer known as Dead Fish Studios are arresting because they're posed, not in spite of it. No easy feat. The use of light is enough to make me to wish that all of my sexual encounters, real and imagined, entailed breasts rising out the shadows, asses coming out of nowhere, legs extended out of permanent blackness. These tantalizing, noir-ish images resemble tableaus — "Still Life of Penis, Ass and Feet" perhaps — and require contemplation similar to an oil painting of well-placed fruit. While it's unsettling to see a tattoo, a nipple or the curve of a penis before you discern a face, the photos remain inventive and arousing. There's a dreamlike quality at play here; the body is dislocated but always tangible.
