Orientalia
by Reagan Louie
Western representations of sex workers in Asia tend to fall into one of two categories. This first is orientalist fantasy: silk kimonos are slipped over the smooth skin of Madame Butterfly or Suzie Wong. The second is occidental horror: wretched, trafficked waifs are trapped in the seedy, sexual underbellies of foreign locals. One is the reflection of Western guilt, the other of Western desire.
