Photographer Kevin Slaughter recently heard that a grindhouse in Baltimore was unloading its old films. The place had changed hands, and the new owner wanted everything to be "state-of-the-art DVD." Its old smut flicks dated from the 1930s through to the mid-'80s, and though few of them still ran in the peep booths on ancient spool reels, they were hopelessly grainy, dated, and no longer profitable for a modern smut enterprise.
"As a business decision, it's understandable," says Slaughter, who traveled to Baltimore to pick up the trove and is restoring the images. "They were just desperate to find someone to take them. I suppose we were one step ahead of the Rotenburg Collection," the famous 19th century porn archive found in a Dumpster in the 1990s. When he arrived in Baltimore and entered the room stacked on all sides with countless hours of porno, he was in awe. "This room held the inspiration for untold thousands of peep-booth ejaculations over the span of decades!"
Slaughter's meticulous restorations are a delight, as are the untrimmed pubes, gangly limbs and beards (beards in porn!) of the subjects, whose very filthiness makes us wish we were born thirty years earlier. — Will Doig
