NSFW Lingerie Ad Is Interesting, Original, and Bound For Controversy
By Brian FairbanksOctober 23rd, 2009, 3:12 pmComments (13)Yet another NSFW European ad has hit the internet today, and this time, it's just better if you watch it and tell us what you think without us spoiling anything.
The early reviews are in. From Jezebel:
You could view the woman in the commercial as confident and self-assured; or you could see her as the embodiment of a Western stereotype: The vixen under the veil.
AdFreak:
[W]e're treated to an exotic hottie in this ad by Berlin agency Glow that boasts a cool, even poignant, twist ending.
CopyRanter:
The spot can be viewed a couple of ways: empowering to women, especially women in certain desert nations; or promoting stereotypical Western views.

What "stereotypical western views"? Anybody that has had the opportunity to travel business of first class from Europe to Asia with on a western airline with a short stop in some of the Gulf states has witnessed those gorgeous women in very sexy expensive designers outfits (including micro-skirts) and very high heels lining up to go to the bathroom about an hour before landing to emerge a few minutes later completely cloaked and veiled in black. With the outfits the women wear under their cloaks it is not very difficult to think that they probably are also wearing fancy lingerie. The clear separation between the public and the private in their social context!
Wow, that's gonna piss some people of. Good.
well i guess that just goes to show "there is no god but dollahs and mohammed is his profit."
nothing stereotypical here. It's a reality.
It would have been funnier if she were a nun.
Wow, I totally didn't expect the ending. I don't understand how this is "promoting Western views" since she does not stay in just lingerie for the whole commercial.
It's stereotypical to look for stereotypes in this sexy and surprising ad.

Brilliant! A complete and total acknowledgement to women and the power of femininity!
It definitely knocked me for a loop but I think I like it. It's just saying that even though she's all covered up in burkaliciousness, she is a sexy vixen underneath. I don't think there's anything offensive about that.
So many shopping malls in arab countries are full of lingerie shops, and from what I've been told by women friends living in Dubai, this is definitely how women tend to dress under their burkas. In 110 degrees plus, would you really want to wear any more under there?
if i wanted to see a naked woman put on underwear i would just get dressed in front of the mirror.
at what point will people realize that nudity in media is one of the most cliche ways to push the envelope? think up something new!
as for the twist at the end: so what. some Muslim women like to wear sexy panties under their clothes. this is not uncommon.
I see this every other day at my "female only" gym: women coming in fully covered, taking off their cloaks, only to reveal sports bras and short shorts and hopping on the elliptical. And at the end of the hour, toweling off and putting the burka back on. It's really no big deal, but I am sure this ad will make it one!
