This morning started like any other, get to work, peruse the interwebs, tweet vapidly, until, I came across THIS. The truth. Harsh and undeniable. I felt like Deep Throat. (Not that Deep Throat, sickos, this one). I knew I had to blog about it, even if ruffled some feathers 'round the coop. However, given where I work, I feel the need to tread lightly. To start: I love me some Lady G. I watched the Telephone video like nine times on the day it came out, and at least six or seven times since. I eat more sandwiches than I used to, and I am not a communist.
However, Sri Lankan pop wonderlady M.I.A. in a recent interview dropped some pretty harsh truth bombs about the Haus of Gaga. And they're great:
[Lady Gaga] spits it out exactly the same! None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I fucking do!
Do we still need record labels? Are they even interested in making money from music anymore? Lady Gaga plugs 15 things in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger! That’s probably how they’re making money right now - buying up the burger joint, putting the burger in a music video and making loads of burger money.
It's so true! Telephone" the video is great. I'm sure "Telephone" the live stadium performance is greater. But the song sucks. It's pretty boring, standard-fare pop. There. I said it. And while Gaga's kitschy Miracle Whip spectacular is pretty, well, spectacular - it would have been greater without the bash-you-over-the-head, good-God-is-nothing-still-sacred? product placement.
So way to fight against the hegemony, M.I.A.
