Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send their friend around the world in "An Idiot Abroad"

Idiot Karl Pilkington

In a calculated, reaching, but still funny televised endeavor, the duo behind The Office and Extras will fly their idiot friend around the world. Said idiot is Karl Pilkington, a hater of "anything foreign, everything different."

Gervais calls the series a "documentary," which we believe is British for "reality show."

When did Gervais develop that laugh? Jesus. Anyway, An Idiot Abroad: a ruthless exercise in celebrity schadenfreude, or an awesome way to make money? Both! It's slated to air in the UK this fall but no word yet when it will screen in America.

Dear Lindsey... A. that's Gervais laugh since he was born. B. Neither calculated nor reaching is an apt description of what the purpose of this "doc." C. Listen to any and all of the Gervai's History/Guide series, then laugh at how appropriate sending Pilkington anywhere outside his day to day life would be.

@Brian, I agree with you on the laugh, though it is fair to point out as it's fairly outrageous. But the concept is absolutely calculated. Pinkerton is a guy that Gervais finds funny but I'm not sure the rest of the world will.

Yeah, Pinkerton was Weezer's best album...not sure it's all that funny but if Gervais thinks it is than who am I to argue. As for Pilkington the world already finds him funny because we watch The Ricky Gervais show and listen to the pod-casts. Or by world did you mean America?
