I think it's Mel's desperate attempt to look like less of a douchebag.
You cite the AV Club's article - which made no mention of a meeting of Gibson and Weiner and in fact made fun of the gossip columnist who originally wrote the rumour piece - as the source for your headline that Gibson met Weiner? Seriously? Did you even read the Av Club's page, or just link to it and embellish it a bit?
