Sometimes, when a filmmaker with a very specific style takes on a mainstream project, the result can be a superlative take on a genre storyline. So why does this, the latest film from the gifted Tom Tykwer, look so standard-issue? Part of the problem is that conspiracy thrillers are generally pretty similar in their narratives- a corrupt institution with almost unspeakable power, a man trying to expose the corruption, a serious threat to his own life and the loves of those closest to him that inspires him to get really serious, and so on. But what disappointed me about this trailer is how little of Tykwer’s style really seeps through. Honestly, if I hadn’t known going in, I wouldn’t have pegged this as a Tykwer film. Say what you will about Perfume, it was definitely the work of an artist. And while I like Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, so while I’m sure this could help their box-office bankability, I for one would like to see them in more eclectic roles befitting their talents.
