Corey, 21 & Meliah, 20
Hello, adorable couple! What are you guys each listening to these days?
Corey: Man, that’s a loaded question. I have to think about that.
Meliah: I’m very into Bon Iver right now. Especially his cover of... I can’t think of the name of the song. I played it for Corey last night on YouTube.
Corey: Listener.
Meliah: Oh, right. Listener, “Wooden Heart.”
What kind of music are they?
Corey: They’re kind of like slam poetry over music.
Meliah: It’s very interesting.
Corey: There’s some synth in there and some acoustic guitar. Really, it’s mostly his voice and his inflection that gets me. It’s really cool, I like it.
What's your favorite genre?
Corey: I’ve got a really big soft spot for the late ‘90’s/early 2000s pop-punk scene. New Found Glory, Blink 182.
Listen: Blink 182, "Damnit"
Maybe a little Sum 41?
Corey: Um, yes. Does This Look Infected? “The Hell Song!” Love it. See, that’s culture. That’s the Renaissance. Oh, the angst.
Meliah: Mine’s definitely more swing music, way back to World War Two-era. I love The Andrew Sisters and Billie Holiday. I mean, you’ve got to have a little bit of the classics, like “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by The Andrew Sisters. And “I’ll Be Seeing You” by Billie Holiday. All day long.
Listen: The Andrew Sisters, “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”
Ok, what's your guiltiest pleasure?
Corey: Oh, definitely Nikki Minaj, “Super Bass.” I am guilty.
Meliah: Mine’s Britney Spears, “Lucky.”
Listen: Nikki Minaj, “Super Bass”
Late ‘90s all over the place! So are you guys dating?
Corey: We are!
Meliah: For about eight months.
How’s that going?
Corey: Well! It’s going well.
Meliah: We live together in Brooklyn.
Corey: In Bushwick. “East Williamsburg.”
Do you guys have a song?
[both immediately start laughing]
Corey: [to Meliah] Ready? On three.
Meliah: [to Corey] Are you going to say... ? [Makes “kitty paws”]
Corey: What? “Wildcat,” by Ratatat? That’s a... different kind of song. No, um... ours is by this super-cheesy, mid-2000s emo band, Backseat Goodbye; the song is called “Hey.” Remember that time period when all those way-too-cutesy bands were happening? [to Meliah] You want to be my new best friend?
Meliah: [to Corey] Hey, I think you’re groovy, wanna see a movie with me?
That’s all kinds of adorable.

What is this "trip-hop" of which you speak? Nevermind that it's two decades old now and Tricky/Massive Attack/Portishead have been canonized even by notoriously rockist magazines like Rolling Stone. But hey man whatever they make that weirdo artificial computer music stuff. Maybe if they played acoustic guitars or harmonicas they'd be more on your radar.
you sound like a real treat
Injest, you must be a blast at parties!
Yes let's all just make the same jokes and character judgments.
Injest is correct. The "what is trip hop" question should no longer exist in this day and age.
For Injest. Seriously. For something completely different, have you heard of grunge? It's another prehistoric genre. You may have heard of Nirvana.
Jeez, this lady is adorable
Taron is entitled to his musical choices, but I must say I had hoped someone with such a fascinating hat would have a slightly more offbeat/original taste.
That hat thoroughly satisfied his offbeat/original cravings. When he plays cool music that hat renders it mute.
pretty sure that Blink182 song is called "Dammit," or my entire junior high career was a lie.
Right you are! Don't worry, you didn't live a lie.
What happened to Genevieve Field? She was the greatest.
Kelly Clarkson from 2009.. voice of an era
Whoa, Portishead is REALLY good! Kinda inspiring too, I just started making music (with BTV Solo) and this is the sort of stuff that keeps me motivated ;)
Now you say something
