Taron, 34

Taron, what are you listening to?
Right now, I like WBLS because it plays some good music from the ‘90s, and I like some of their R&B soul songs. And, you know, a little pop, too. Sometimes, late nights, they play old school hip-hop. So that station is pretty universal and you’re always going to find some good stuff from the ‘80s and ‘90s on there.

Hit me with your favorite old school '80s hip-hop group.
I like MC Lite and Queen Latifah — stuff like that. I like LL Cool J. I really like the Run-D.M.C. song “Sucka MC’s.”

Listen: Run-D.M.C., “Sucka MC’s”

Let’s talk about the-age old question: East Coast or West Coast?
East Coast.

I agree. Where are you from and what are you up to now?
I’m from Queens, and now, I’m just chillin’ in the sun.

What’s your guilty pleasure music?
I’m not gonna lie, man... 50 Cent. Or, there’s this independent rapper Necro and he’s pretty vicious. He’s just trashing everybody... man, he is rough. He trashes women a lot ― I’m not really supporting it, but it’s so funny, so mischievous that sometimes I just find myself listening to it.

Listen: Necro, “The Dispensation Of Life And Death”

So we can agree that you’re not into trashing women.
Yeah, I would rather not trash anybody, but he goes hard, man. You might put it on somewhere and a woman would be like: “What the heck?” I mean, he tears everybody up, man. He’s worse than Eminem!

Do you ever think about getting into music?
Once in a while I daydream about it... I guess I do have a compartment for that type of daydream. You know, like travelling around Europe or putting something out as an independent artist.

What’s the perfect song to describe today?
Today? Okay. Maybe Kelly Clarkson from 2009. Yeah. 2009 Kelly Clarkson. That’d probably fit today.

What’s your theme song?
My theme song? Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs, “I Got To Have It.” He’s a rapper from Boston.

Listen: Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs, “I Got To Have It”

What is this "trip-hop" of which you speak? Nevermind that it's two decades old now and Tricky/Massive Attack/Portishead have been canonized even by notoriously rockist magazines like Rolling Stone. But hey man whatever they make that weirdo artificial computer music stuff. Maybe if they played acoustic guitars or harmonicas they'd be more on your radar.

Yes let's all just make the same jokes and character judgments.

Injest is correct. The "what is trip hop" question should no longer exist in this day and age.

For Injest. Seriously. For something completely different, have you heard of grunge? It's another prehistoric genre. You may have heard of Nirvana.

Taron is entitled to his musical choices, but I must say I had hoped someone with such a fascinating hat would have a slightly more offbeat/original taste.

That hat thoroughly satisfied his offbeat/original cravings. When he plays cool music that hat renders it mute.

Whoa, Portishead is REALLY good! Kinda inspiring too, I just started making music (with BTV Solo) and this is the sort of stuff that keeps me motivated ;)
