Anti-abortion billboard in NYC targeting African-Americans
By Jeff MillsFebruary 23rd, 2011, 3:00 pmComments (26)As part of a national campaign, anti-abortion group Life Always recently unveiled a huge billboard in the Soho district of New York, featuring a young African-American girl with a caption reading "The Most Dangerous Place For An African-American Is In The Womb." Life Always board member Pastor Stephen Broden had some fightin' words, saying, "During Black History Month, we celebrate our history, but our future is in jeopardy as a genocidal plot is carried out through abortion."
City Council member Letitia Jones, a voice of reason, said in a statement:
"It is misguided to use Black History Month as a tool to promote this message. Every woman has the right to make personal choices in regards to her body, and I respect many different points of view, but to compare abortion to terrorism and genocide is offensive."
According to statistics from the NYC Health Department, African-Americans had the highest number of abortions in 2009, with 40,798. Life Always is using that stat to bolster their pro-life stance. The billboard is located a half-mile away from a Planned Parenthood facility, whose organization states that only three percent of their health services are actually devoted to abortion services. Who else thinks this is a little too in-your-face?

Wow. Genocidal plot? And in New York of all places? This billboard isn't about selling a message to people who would potentially listen; this is about stirring the pot. Ugh.
Yes, please put a nearly-naked woman advertising vodka there instead.
that's polite that they used the term "African-American" though.
You perhaps ignored the fact that the board member of the group behind it is African-American. Abortion was also promoted as a means of reducing the number of undesirables, i.e. among others, African-Americans.
As an African cabbie once told me after i finished a spiel about the ills done to us by White America: "And how do you think we got here?"
Anybody care to wager odds on whether the good Rev has race issues, a mistress, or has a thing for guys in the men's room? Any denomination of church that preaches hatred or intolerance is a mark on all of those who are good enough not to. These folks should be ashamed of themselves.
Please let this be remembered when thinking about or recalling the Christian nation that began, upheld and sanctioned the kidnapping, sale, slavery, dehumanization, debasement and seperation of the NON-CHRISTIAN Africans they brought here.

We've had these billboards in Austin for like a year, but it just shows a Black child and says, "The most dangerous place is in the womb."
If women were being forced at gunpoint to have abortions against their will, that might be considered genocide. But Republicans trying to use laws to force women with unintended or unwanted pregnancies to have (and pay for) babies they don't want...what's the term for that?
results of the promiscuity and lack of self-control and morals in this great Christian nation, America
I actually passed this is person. It made my head hurt. Such an irresponsible, offensive way to get a point across.
I want to see another picture of this billboard tomorrow, but with twenty black dudes in balaclavas rapelling down it with giant paintbrushes....
cost of paint & brushes VS. cost of huge bigoted billboard?
Where is the bigotry?
none for those accustomed to `business as usual.'
This is certainly a disconcerting ad. But I wonder if there is any tasteful way to make a public comment about the fact that in New York City in 2008, 53% of African-American womens' pregnancies ended in abortion. That is really a jamload of abortions. And it seems like nowhere would there be greater access to information and subsidized contraception than in New York City. https://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/vital_statistics/2008/
Where on earth is that statistic? Are you including spontaneous abortions (miscarriages)?
From my understanding of the technical notes, the health department classsifes miscarriages as "spontaneous fetal deaths". Table 29 reports 76,249 total "Black" pregnancies. Then table 23 reports 40,5552 Black abortions. Table 23 reports "induced abortions" which are separate from SFD. Divide Black abortions by total Black pregnancies and multiply by 100%. I know it seems crazy high, doesn't it? If I'm wrong please explain, but my math is consistent with Table 23 reporting 1,259.7 Black abortions per 1,000 live births (all figures for NYC).
If the media stop promoting abortions maybe our sisters wont consider it.On the bus every where u go u c abortion adds wit black faces, so being made 2 believe its ard.I blame the racist media , schools 4 this problem.
LOL.... if you DONT have an abortion you WILL have a BABY... but your just killing a bunch of cells right? blah dont give me that heart defect crap either, dont wanna hear it. its as simple as stated
I wonder if anyone remembers or knows about he incentive given to European women to have babies? Apparently we were made to have more babies as depite all that has happene, we are still producng. Don't get me wrong; whatever is produced should be taken care of by those responsible for its being; but again, that would mean allowing a black man to be a black man and here we go again.....
