FIFA recently chose Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup, which left some people asking: where does that leave gay soccer fans, considering homosexuality is punishable by up to five years in jail in the host country? Well, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has a plan for that: "I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities."
Now, it's not like this was a press release or anything planned out — he was asked by a journalist and answered off the cuff, and Blatter is known to be a foot-in-mouth kind of guy. (He once suggested female soccer players should wear tighter clothes if they want to up attendance.) But it does show a lack of consideration for those same-sex loving World Cup buffs. There must be more than a few in the audience of the most popular sporting event in the world.
To be fair, I would say that gay fans probably shouldn't have a ton of gay sex in Qatar, if only to protect themselves. But this does bring up one pertinent question: should they have given the event to a country with some, uh, human-rights issues?
