The dictator

It's not at all surprising that Sacha Baron Cohen, creator and star of Da Ali G Show, Borat, Brüno, etc., would make a movie called The Dictator. It's also not at all surprising that the movie would feature him in full beard, aviators, and a white military uniform dropping loosely Arabic-sounding slang, terrorist jokes, and at least one AIDS reference.

The Dictator follows (made-up) North African dictator General Aladeen. The trailer doesn't exactly outline a plot, but I think we can safely assume that it features Cohen approaching strangers (or actors pretending to be strangers) and making people all worried and stuff. If you thought the story of royalty from parts unknown pissing off New Yorkers with graceless cultural idiocy couldn't get anymore borderline offensive than Eddie Murphy's Coming to America... you were very wrong:

Also appearing in the film is, as you can see from that trailer, hot-lady Megan Fox. Anna Faris will also have a role as General Aladeen's "love interest." You could say this is just another variation on Cohen's oft-used mixture of culture-clash, I'm-making-fun-of-your-American-ignorance theme, but why should that be a bad thing? The man who's given us some of the most imaginatively explicit nude scenes in popular cinema history has found a way to make us laugh uncomfortably again.

This is actually the first time I can recall not being completely repulsed by a Sacha Baron Cohen film or character.

omfg, i've been WAITIN' on another of his flicks! He's something of a one trick pony and he's cornered himself into this niche of a niche of a niche character acting sthick, but when the trick that pony flaunts is a masterful, intelligent, politically undertoned AND side-splittingly hilarious one, then by god recycle that shit till the wheels fall off.

This is the only Sacha Baron Cohen movie that just doesn't sit right with me, and I think it has a lot to do with that horrendous fake beard.

Nice close-up of Fox's freakish thumb.
