Now that the general consensus seems to be that James Franco and Anne Hathaway's hosting gig at this years Oscars was a bust, those who care are left asking why. (There are literally four people who care, but since I'm writing this I guess I am one? That's sad.) To that end, New York Magazine asked Oscar writer Bruce "Center Square" Vilanch just what exactly went wrong with Franco, and the comedian was not exactly kind:
He has so many balls in the air, he didn't get to town till Thursday before the show on Sunday… I don't think he realized how big a deal it is to do it until he was actually confronted with it. I think he thought he would kind of … I don't know what he thought.
He also made some very stale jokes about Franco sleeping in class, which I will spare you the indignity of reading. So, his assessment wasn't exactly glowing, but Vilanch says he approved of the pair even if they didn't come off very well. Which is what everyone else said, pretty much. But Franco, he was not pleased, which is why he tweeted this Perez Hilton-esque graffitied picture of the writer yesterday:
That's just… dickish. This feels like one of those Alien vs. Predator situations for me, because I am rooting for neither side to win this battle. (This is what "battle" means now.) Let's just say everyone loses!
