Watch Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

In case you were wondering what Steve Carrell has been up to since that movie with the title with the crazy, stupid, grammar, we now have an answer — he'll be starring what's essentially an unofficial Hollywood remake of Melancholia, a film charmingly titled Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Indeed, if Lars Von Trier had chosen lithium over psychoanalysis, he may have made this movie: change a planet named Melancholia to an asteroid named Matilda, substitute a dowdy Charlotte Gainsbourg for a perky Keira Knightley and Kirsten Dunst for Steve Carell, substitute Wagner for Talking Heads, and you have Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, the Little Miss Sunshine of mass annihilation. 

The just-released trailer for The End (written and directed by Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist writer Lorene Scafaria) showcases Steve Carell in his typical state of impotency: his wife has just left him, and he finds himself helpless as Matilda (IMDB confirms that Mara Wilson will not be playing the asteroid) approaches. Fortunately, his neighbor happens to be Keira Knightley ("Penny") and not a more realistic neighbor archetype like… me, for example. In light of impending doom, the two transcend the figurative and literal walls between them, and take off on a road trip to reconnect Carell's character with the sweetheart of his past. We can assume that Knightley will end up being his apocalypse sweetheart, and that Bruce Willis (or Richard Dreyfuss, for that matter) will somehow find a way to destroy the asteroid before it hits Earth. 

In case you simply can't wait for December 22nd, The End jumps the gun by six months with a June 22 release date. It'll provide you plenty of time for planning your own indie-quirky demise.
