"Nobody wants to see two septuagenarians get it on," confirms Woody Allen

For many, the popular thing to do when discussing Woody Allen is to sigh and wish he'd return to those Annie Hall-slash-Manhattan salad days. (Many would also like a return to the zaniness of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask), but that might be asking for the world at this point.)

And wouldn't you know it, Woody Allen seems to want such a return as well. The problem is, he doesn't believe we really want to see him and Diane Keaton get romantic. He explained to the Guardian why exactly he's cut himself out of his cinematic romances, whether or not he likes it:

"I can't be the love interest any more. I can't play opposite Scarlett Johansson, it's not appropriate. So what can I do? I'd love to have a wonderful tour de force part with Diane Keaton but the problem... doing what? ... Nobody wants to see two septuagenarians get it on. People may say they do but they don't. They want to see Leonardo DiCaprio chasing after Scarlett Johansson. They don't want me flirting with Diane Keaton."

Of course, some of us have been watching his recent efforts anyway and think that, all in all, he's still making pretty good movies, regardless of who's boinking whom. And while he may have a point about general audiences not wanting to see senior citizens get kinky, he might be underestimating how many critics and art-house fans would in fact love to see him and Keaton spark it up on the silver screen again. Ingmar Bergman's Saraband, anyone?
