Shocker: Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Michael Moore feud over politics on "The View"

On Wednesday, the outspoken Michael Moore brought his baseball-capped self to The View to promote his new memoir, Here Comes Trouble: Stories From My Life. Waiting for him at the table was, of course, the equally outspoken Elisabeth Hasselbeck. A very combustible mixture, you might say.
The spirited exchange began after mother hen Barbara Walters asked Moore about comments he had made saying that Osama bin Laden shouldn't have been executed, and that people shouldn't have been celebrating his death. Moore responded by saying, "I think we did a very smart thing putting the Nazis on trial," referencing the post-World War II Nuremberg trials. Hasselbeck interjected with "That was after the war was over." Moore came back with "The war is over," and they were off and running.
Moore, who was physically attacked several times after denouncing the Iraq War during his 2003 Oscar acceptance speech, believes that bin Laden should have been brought to trial rather than killed, which is easy to say when you're not one of the Navy Seals carrying out a dangerous, undercover-of-night raid in a hostile land. Moore said, "My point is that the way we show the world that we're different is that we give even the most heinous person their day in court." Rosie O'Donnell's old nemesis was flabbergasted. She sarcastically retorted, "Why, because Casey Anthony's trial went so well we should put Osama bin Laden on the stand?" as if there was a chance that bin Laden would have pulled off an O.J.
The winner here, regardless of who you agree with, would have to be Hasselbeck, who generated free publicity for her new CMT series, Angels Among Us, which premieres tonight. The show... let's see here... tells the stories of real-life men and women who claim that angels saved them from tragedy. Yup.

Everything --literally, *everything* -- that comes out of Michael Moore's mouth is santorum.

The fact that both Hasslebeck and Moore are asshats is what makes this whole exchange disgusting. They're both professional liars.
Although, I will say, in this conversation: Moore was 100000% in the right. I'm not sad Osama's dead, far from it. But a trial would have let us keep the last semblance our moral high ground, if it hasn't eroded completely out from under us already.
And where would Obama have held the trial and carried out the sentence? Gitmo, the place he said was unconstitutional and should be closed? New York--as if the public and any member of congress would allow it?
Obama painted himself into a corner on this one. In seeking to give rights to foreign nationals at war with the US, he made it impossible to try them, and only possible to carry out executions without trial.

Hasselbeck never comes off all that well in these set-tos. She has her convictions, but she doesn't express them very well. Plus the other women on the View aren't all that interested in serious debate; they want to both keep the show moving and in Joy Behar's case, get laughs. Then EH loses patience and starts throwing in any anti-liberal insult she can think of.
