Clips From "Kaboom" Prove Gregg Araki Is Still Gregg Araki

Don't get me wrong; I loved "Mysterious Skin", and his other films have their moments, but these clips kind of feel like his entire body of work put into a blender with the Vanity Fair "Young Hollywood" issue. This is not, necessarily, a bad thing.

Clip 2:

I'll admit, the first clip made me laugh. (Of course, I am an easy sell when it comes to sexually adventurous cute guys.) And I will probably see this. But after the surprisingly mature and thoughtfully crafted departure that was Mysterious Skin, I worry that Kaboom — which involves a sci-fi plot to end the world when it's not concerned with sexual bingo — feels a bit like a retread of his "Doom Generation" trilogy.

What do you think, readers? Has Araki earned the benefit of the doubt?

I'm on the fence too.

I want to like Araki, I really do. And I tried valiently to defend and/or justify 'Doom Generation' (especially after that scathing Ebert review), 'Nowhere' and 'Totally F Up' to all and sundry, but time has been less kind to his brand of nonsense than one might have hoped.

Let's face it; at this point, the only good Araki films are the ones with Michelle Trachtenberg in 'em. And that's depressing thing to say about ANY director.

Can't wait, been an Araki fan forever. Love his style and use of sexuality.
