Someone alerted us to this list of 500 free Amazon mp3 downloads. While most of them are obscure and probably terrible, we must remind you: they are free. (You think we actually sat there and downloaded them all... and then listened to them? You must really believe that old rumor about us bloggers sitting around in our underwear all day watching Oprah. No way, man, we have schedules and-- worse-- laundry to take care of.)
Some of these are weaker album tracks you probably wouldn't have downloaded with your purchase of the hit singles by these artists, but with the economy the way it is, you could save $17 on a Valentine's Day CD purchase by just downloading these for your significant other and then calling it a mix CD. (We especially recommend you all download the first song listed here, which is just one of four near-classics on the new Eno-Byrne album. The Bell X1 and Loudon Wainwright tracks are particularly good, as well...)
Strange Overtones by David Byrne/Brian Eno
100 Days, 100 Nights by Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings
Dead Sound by The Raveonettes
Motel Blues by Loudon Wainwright III
Skunk (Sonically Speaking) by the MC5
Eve, The Apple Of My Eye by Bell X1
Everybody's Got To Learn Some Time(Dna Mix 93) by the Korgis
...and a few we haven't heard that might be decent...
Another World by Antony & the Johnsons
Hesitation Blues by Asleep at the Wheel w/Willie Nelson
How Come (Album Version) by Ray Lamontagne
Hurtin' You by Ben Kweller
Prayer Wheel by Nels Cline
And with that, here's the full 500.
