‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Goes Tamer for Film
That's disappointing.
According to reports, the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation will be much tamer than its source material in order to avoid the NC-17 rating. But then what’s left? James Dornan and Dakota Johnson—the duo to take on millionaire Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele’s erotic exploits— already filmed most of the steamy sex scenes, but as the studio opts for a lower age rating, they’re in danger of getting cut. It just would be unfortunate to let that hard work go to waste.
The film’s producer, Michael De Luca, agrees that while the action in the Red Room is cinematic, he wants to stay true to the couple’s relationship. “I think people love a good love story,” he said at Sundance this week. “These two characters endeared themselves to 90 millions readers, so it’s hard to say that it didn’t connect on a deeper level than just its more sensationalist aspects.”
When a book transitions to film, cuts are expected, but going less racy could disappoint fans. E.L. James’ internationally famous trilogy dealing with a kinky businessman (Dorman) and a submissive, naïve college student (Johnson) shocked then won over readers because of the spectrum of naughty sex, and for the film version, fans will want to see it—all fifty shades of it.
