Art with a social conscience.
British artist Jamie McCartney set out half a decade ago to create a monumental wall sculpture to showcase and educate what normal women really look like. McCartney knows vagina art is normally set aside for pornographers and erotic artists, but his piece is not to stimulate, but communicate.
The goal of the piece is literally to change people's mindset on the "perfect vagina." McCartney speaks on the rise of cosmetic labia surgeries in recent years. "For many women, their genital appearance is a source of anxiety and I was in a unique position to do something about that."
Wanting to be as inclusive as possible, McCartney placed casts on over 400 volunteers, including mothers and daughters, identical twins, transgendered men and women, as well as pre and post natal mothers, and women who have undergone labiaplasty. "Vulvas and labia are as different as faces and many people, particularly women, don't seem to know that."
McCartney has created a fascinating piece that is far from erotic, telling a story about individual beauty and sexuality rather than gratuitous nudity.
