4K offers viewers four times times the eroticism — or at least, four times the number of pixels.
Warner Brothers is doing it. Lionsgate is doing it. Comcast, DirectTV, and Netflix are doing it. It only makes sense companies devoted to doin’ it are doing it. 4K content may be the future, and according to the Wall Street Journal, adult film production company Naughty America just announced their plan to offer ultra-high definition 4K content. That means that porn is about to get real. Hair-follicle-revealing, wrinkle-enhancing, is-that-a-goosebump-or-does-that-actor-have-mild-eczema real. Because while regular HD viewing gives fans sex at a 1080p resolution, 4K offers viewers four times times the eroticism — or at least, four times the number of pixels.
But moving to 4K is no small undertaking: according to the WSJ, the required expenses — new, 4K-specific editing equipment, extra server space to store and access the ultra-crisp films — are enough to “sink the company, should the format fail to take off.” Still, Naughty America CEO Andreas Hronopoulos is confident that the risk is going to be worth it. “Our customers want to get as close to reality as they can get, without reality getting in the way,” he says. And he’s not alone in his analysis. Last year, Huccio.com became the first site to offer “4K erotic content,” and the Verge reports that while porn production company Pink Visual isn’t committed yet, they, too, are “investigating the feasibility of 4K videos.”
Not that everyone in the industry is convinced that the extra pixels are worth the investment. A recent industry survey showed that 40 percent of adult filmmakers “didn’t think the technology would do much for business”— a somewhat reasonable position, given that, to get the full 4K effect, viewers need a special 4K TV. And while 4K TVs may be the TVs of the very near future (and expensive present), they’re not a household standard. Yet.
But given the number of 4K announcements at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show, Mr. Hronopoulos’s faith in our sexy 4K future seems well placed. Our sexy, extremely well-defined, very clear, up-close-and-personal 4K future.
