Five Albums You Should Be Listening To Right Now
This week's curator: Rusty Stallone of New York's legendary Generation Records.
Every week, titans of the music-sphere give Hooksexup their album recommendations. This week: Rusty Stallone of Generation Records, a legendary NYC record store that's survived seventeen years of music-industry turmoil by the sheer force of its collection.
Little Ann, Deep Shadows
Check out the whole album, seriously, but the track "Deep Shadows" is the most essential on the record. It's an amazing soul record. It was recorded in the sixties, but never sold a lot of copies then; luckily, it's been reissued. It's one of those hidden gems that you can't even believe is from back then — where you're like, why is she not huge and famous when all these other sub-par people are?

Necros, Conquest for Death
This is just an essential punk album. These guys were Detroit hardcore pioneers.

Government Warning, Paranoid Mess
The song here that you need to check out is "Rot and Decay." It's eighties first-wave hardcore that's basically necessary listening for anybody who even thinks that they might like hardcore.

Reigning Sound, Too Much Guitar
"I'll Cry" is just a raucous garage track on an album perfect for anybody who wants to have a good time with a few beers on a Friday night. While crying, I guess.

Menahan Street Band, Make the Road By Walking
This is another soul record. The whole album is pretty much one whole song to me, but I'll say that the title track, "Make the Road By Walking," is the most important. If you listen to that one song, you'll get hooked immediately. (Actually, either that or their cover of the theme from Rocky.) It's a great album to play on a Sunday afternoon when you're relaxing, cleaning your house, just hanging out with your ladyfriend or your boyfriend or your dog or your farm animal.

Commentarium (6 Comments)
Wale has a track on one of his mix-tapes where he raps over "Make the Road By Walking", I think without altering it at all. Can't remember what it's called but I remember thinking it was pretty strange and impressive when I heard it.
Make the Road By Walking was sampled by Jay-Z for Roc Boys, one of his singles off of the American Gangster soundtrack, and the beat was later used on that Wale mixtape. Great list, too, Reigning Sound is one of my favorite bands. I've gotta check out Generation Records some time soon.
this is all pretty much in my wheelhouse. old school punk and old soul records. bring Rusty back to do five more.
Yeah, can Rusty be put on payroll? He needs to be in charge of this.
Who listens to albums anymore?
