Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld (you know, the sunglasses freak with the wooden fans) acted as Metro Paris' guest editor on Monday, during which time he drew sketches and made unfiltered comments, as he's wont to do. He opined on topics ranging from Queen Elizabeth to Syria to the Greek economic crisis. (I can hear the "who cares" already.) But some remarks he made about Adele have the seventy-eight-year-old Lagerfeld in hot water today.
Lagerfeld (who once said, "No one wants to see curvy women") made this statement:
"I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."
"A little too fat?" Really, Lagerfeld? That's not cool, especially directed at someone who just recovered from throat surgery, and, incidentally, has recently lost weight at that. Sure, Lagerfeld lost ninety-three pounds in thirteen months back in 2001, and had a successful book called The Karl Lagerfeld Diet, but that wording's a little careless, bro. And when you look like a character out of a Teutonic Inception, your opinion is questionable anyway.
Lagerfeld also (like many others) downplayed the M.I.A. Superbowl Halftime Show middle-finger controversy, and, speaking on Russian women, said, "If I was a woman in Russia I would be a lesbian, as the men are very ugly." Er, right.
And since opinions of Lana Del Rey are de rigeur as of late, he gave his not-quite-flattering two cents on her as well:
"She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She's not alone with implants."
But the best was Karl on political correctness. Here's your pot/kettle moment of the day:
"Be politically correct, but don't become a bore for that. People should be sensitive in these matters, but not make so much noise. Be politically correct, but do we have to know your opinion?"
