Soccer moms nationwide are probably feeling tingly after images of George Clooney being handcuffed at a D.C. protest were posted on CNN earlier today. The Fantastic Silver Fox was placed under arrest for civil disobedience outside the Sudanese embassy, where he was protesting the Sudanese government's treatment of the Nuba people.
Clooney, a longtime activist, was arrested outside the embassy with his father Nick and fellow protesters Martin Luther King III, NAACP president Ben Jealous, Al Green, Rep. Jim McGovern (D. Mass), and Rep. Jim Moran (D. Va), who held signs reading "Sudan: Stop Weapons of Mass Starvation" and "Stop Bombing Civilians Now!" The group was warned to stay away from the embassy three times before police took them away.
Prior to his arrest, Clooney spoke about the government's blockage of food and aid from entering the Nuba mountains, where nearly half a million people are at risk of starvation. "We need immediate humanitarian aid into Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world," Clooney told the crowd.
The actor has often spoken publicly about the humanitarian crisis in the border between Sudan and South Sudan, even testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday about his experience visiting the region, where he at one point came under rocket attack. So basically, George Clooney is brave and awesome, and now I feel bad about making jokes about soccer moms possibly rubbing one out to him.
