Because straight-up remakes are unoriginal and lazy, Jason Reitman is staging a much more intellectual-sounding "live read" of the John Hughes' classic The Breakfast Club. The sold-out event is set for this Thursday in L.A. and will benefit the Film Independent.
This live read features (depending on your attitude towards Varsity Blues) some audacious casting. Reitman announced via Twitter that his event would star Mindy Kaling in the basket case (Ally Sheedy) role, James Van Der Beek in the jock (Emilio Estevez) role, Patton Oswalt in the brain (Anthony Michael Hall) role, and, because he is contractually obligated to appear in all things Reitman, J.K. Simmons in the janitor (John Kapelos) role.
No word yet on who will be playing the princess, the burn-out, or principal. So let the wild speculation begin! Emily Blunt or Rachel McAdams as Claire? Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Michael Pitt as Bender? Kevin Spacey or Alan Rickman as Principal Vernon? Ah, screw it. Let's just have Cate Blanchett play all three.
