Indie Dev Moment: Eegra Shindig Ends, No One Got Laid, Awesome Games Got Made

Posted by John Constantine

Way back in April of aught-eight, our favorite internet savages at Eegra got it in their heads to host an indie games competition. Known worldwide as the First Annual Game Makin’ Shindig, they called for strapping minds to create games based around the central theme of “colour” (the u comes from some kind of Australian brain disease I’m not familiar with.) Now, as July comes to a close, the Shindig has come to a close and, while no one involved apparently got laid, nine games have been created, all of them damn interesting. The top prize winners ColourWise, Colourblind (tied for third), the Eegra-ly titled Spectrum Spelunker: Shoot Blocks to Win the Game, Also Jump and Run: Starring Hue, and top-dog Go Beryllium are all deserving champions, excellent games made even more excellent by their abundant freeness.

Second Place: Spectrum Spelunker

First Place: Go Beryllium

Make sure to check out the runners-up, particularly Space Safari and Tinte if for no other reason than they look awesome.

61 Frames Per Second salutes our brethren across the Pacific for promoting independent games creation.

Sidenote: The Ten Orangest Game Characters of All Time, eh? We know when we’re being laughed at!

Sidenote Two: The only runners-up I actually played were Space Safari and Tinte. Mostly because they looked awesome.

I had been loosely following this competition for a while now. Tinte looked like it'd be a lot of fun, but it ended up being too combat based, sadly. I also have to raise an eyebrow at the 1st place winner. It doesn't seem to have a whole lot to do with colour, which was the theme of the contest. I love Spectrum Spelunker, though! That game is addicting. I've played it a bunch of times since the competition ended and it was released. It's a very well put together game. Graphics, sound, game engine, it all works very well. I'm very glad I get the opportunity to play it. :P

Joe Keiser has a programming degree from Johns Hopkins University, a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and a fake toy guitar built in the hollowed-out shell of a real guitar. He writes about games and technology for a variety of outlets. One day he will stop doing this. Peter Smith is like the lead character of Irwin Shaw's The 80-Yard Run, except less athletic. He considers himself very lucky to have this job. But it's a little premature to take "jack-off of all trades" off his resume. Besides writing, travelling, and painting houses, Pete plays guitar in a rock trio called The Aye-Ayes. He calls them a 'power pop' band, but they generally sound more like Motorhead on a drinking binge.
