A good April Fool’s joke, for me, is not even really a joke… I’m not fooled easily, and especially not on April Fool’s Day. If anything, I’m extra skeptical about everything I hear:
“Apple stock soars? SURE it does.”
“War in the Middle East? Yeah right.”
“I have three weeks to live? Okay, doctor, WHATEVER you say. Wink!”
So to me, a good one is one that’s presented rather straight-faced, has a fair degree of thought put into it, and is off from reality enough that you know it’s not real, but not far enough off that it isn’t possible someone could actually have done or made that thing for real.
So without further ado, my top favorites for this April Fool’s Day in products:
1. The CatBox 360

This would be hands down my favorite just because of the cute kitteh factor, but beyond that, it fulfills all of my above requirements. As ridiculous as the idea of a video game system for cats is, you have to remember that there actually is television programming for cats, costumes for cats, and even more stuff that SHOULD NOT BE FOR CATS.

2. PTeq USB Pregnancy Test

I know I made a big point about not getting fooled by things, but this particular one had me thinking for a second it might be real, just based on how useful it could be. Imagine having a pregnancy test that plugged into the USB port of any computer, and accurately determined in a straight-forward way whether you were pregnant or not. Then we could finally get rid of the scene in every sitcom and movie where characters “hilariously” talk about how difficult it is to figure out pregnancy tests!

3. Betamax to HD-DVD Converter

Think Geek gets on here for the second time in a row for creating the most useless item ever not made. Also, bonus points for this video, which shows you how to use the converter:
