Geek Out: Stargate Mirror

Posted by Alex Zalben

There are very few things that are more shameful that being a Star Trek fan. Being a Star Wars fan occasionally falls into that category (though they keep switching levels back and forth). Babylon 5 fans are lower on the geek scale, though they would argue they’re smarter and cooler, which only makes them geekier. Battlestar Galactica fans, of course, are actually cool. Cough.

However, it takes a special kind of person to admit that they are a die-hard Stargate fan. Now, 100% honestly, and I know you guys won’t believe this, but I am NOT a die-hard Stargate fan. I know, it’s like the one thing I don’t geek out about, right?

That doesn’t mean I don’t like the movie, and its two spin-off television shows. They’ve been running for over ten years at this point, and are the height of comfort food. The movie itself was fine, but SG-1 is a totally solid, enjoyable Sci-Fi show, or at least it was before MacGyver left.

Anyway, Think Geek has just released a Stargate mirror. Because I’m NOT a super geek about the show, I’m totally NOT going to buy it IMMEDIATELY. But if you are a fan, how fun, right? You can either leave it as a regular mirror, or stick in an insert that has the ripply “water” effect that happens when the Stargate gets activated. Plus, it will send your face to brand new worlds and galaxies*!

Okay, I swore to myself I wouldn’t tell you guys these two things, but in the interests of journalistic integrity:

- The other night, I flipped on the TV, and my S.O. said, “Hey what’s this show?” as there were no identifiable actors, and they were in some unidentifiable jungle. I had already identified it as Stargate: Atlantis the second we turned it on.

- There was a point several weeks ago when the Stargate title music was my ring tone.

But I promise I’m not a Stargate geek. I’m not! I'M NOT! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

[$50, Think Geek]

*Not true.

about the blogger

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance writer and proofreader who has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press, Playgirl, and other bastions of fine writing. She maintains a professional site https://www.stephiswrite.com, and also blogs about freelancing over at Freelancedom. You can keep up on her day-to-day by visiting her Twitter page.

Diana Vilibert is a freelance writer, among other things. Born in Lithuania, she now lives in New Jersey, where she doesn't have to walk to work ten miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Diana cannot afford most of the products she writes about because she buys too many pairs of heels to make up for her shoeless childhood. She's written for MarieClaire.com, Janemag.com, and CosmoGIRL!.
