Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd are going to play the leads in a romantic comedy. If that coupling and the super-funny trailer seem too-good to be true — okay, I might've thought it was and didn't want to get my hopes up immediately — rest assured that it's just the magical spell of the brilliant Wet Hot American Summer director David Wain. The film, They Came Together, will be out on June 27, and it's going to take apart the rom-com formula and just jab at it with a stick.
The trailer's just wonderful. It hits all of the rom-com necessities like doing fun errands through montage — because montages are the balm of capturing the everyday on film — and having a meet-cute over a mutual love of reading a fiction book. Because, you know, no one else in the world is that quirky. To top it off, it's set in New York, and they have cute jobs as candy shop owners. They're just living the unattainable, fictional American dream.
The movie plot really doesn't matter seeing as we all know it anyway. The synopsis doesn't shy away from that, giving the entire timeline, "amazingly, they fall in love, until they break up about two thirds of the way through" and the resolution, "Hint: Joel (Rudd) makes a big speech and they get back together." It's probably safe to assume that there's also a huge misunderstanding, a big romantic gesture, a sassy best friend for Amy, and commitment guy talk over sports for Paul.
But please let there be a big event where everyone has to get dressed up or even a mad dash through airport security, because those are really the ingredients of true love.
