Senator Hendon speaks about civil unions

Last week, the Illinois legislature passed an historic civil-unions bill, giving gays nearly equal rights in the state. While legalized gay marriage would have obviously been preferable, it was seen as surprising that politicians were willing to take up the fight anywhere with such a huge conservative backlash going on.

If you want to thank someone for standing up for our civil rights, you could start with Senator Rickey R. Hendon of the 5th District. Hendon gave a speech that was so good, someone posted it to YouTube in the hope that it would shut down the bigots and other naysayers. Will it work?

(By the way, Pat Quinn is the Democratic Governor. Some are wary of supporting him because he assumed office thanks to Blago's impeachment.)

Senator Hendon may be turning fifty-seven tomorrow, but his political career is just getting started.

That's refreshing. I'm not sure he's doing anything different than the party line, but I like it.

As a non-believer, I was moved and astounded to hear a Baptist coming out in favour of fairness and equality for gay citizens. This man has a big heart. I am impressed that he understands America is supposed to be the Land of the Free. Free to believe, free to choose, free to practice one's worldview. That goes no matter your sexual orientation.

Nice to hear a religious man who understands that it's not Christian to twist everything to justify your own bigoted hangups. Fair is fair indeed.

Off to find this guy's website to donate money to him online...

Just for a second I thought he was getting worked up to start naming names of those adulterers etc he panned at the beginning. Great speech.

I don't know why, but some Baptists are as prejudiced, and bigoted as they come. Then there are others, like this man, who get it. They live lives of compassion and love, and grace everyone around them with happiness. This man isn't unique, but he's a rarity. I hope his God blesses him abundantly (as if he hasn't already).
