Mitt Romney says he's "not concerned with the very poor"

Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney had a great night, winning the Florida GOP primary with 46 percent of the vote. His campaign was saved! Newt Gingrich was toast! And then Romney had to open his mouth.

"I’m not concerned with the very poor," the former Massachusetts governor told CNN's Soledad O'Brien. "We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich, they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of America."

Like Romney's previous comment about loving to fire people, the full context isn't so damning — he was trying to reassure the middle class — but his word choices won't endear him to an economically slammed electorate. A man worth a quarter of a billion dollars might not want to say things like, "You can focus on the very poor — that’s not my focus."

It's too early to tell whether the gaffe will help Gingrich's chances in Arizona and Michigan, but — just to be safe — the Romney campaign will immediately return of the malfunctioning unit to U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men, Inc. for adjustments to its haywire positronic brain.

You must think your readers are truly stupid. You point out that in context the remarks are not "damning" yet you purposely take them out of context in an effort, apparently, to generate anti-Romney sentiment. Yellow journalism at its finest.

Even in context his sentiments are atrocious. Don't worry, Observer, most people are not swayed simply by suggestion. The more sentient of us are anti-Romney because he's an immoral scumbag socially and a dawdling dimwit economically.

Sure, JH

Immoral socially? What does that even mean? And he's rich as hell which really renders your dawdling dimwit argument moot.

@JH: In context he made *exactly* the correct point: there is already a safety net for the very poor (one the Democrats are quite happy to see people continue to be ensnared in, as that forms a huge portion of their base -- once they no longer need the net they no longer need the Democrats), and the very rich don't need anyone's help at all. It *is*, without any question, the middle class that are most threatened at this point in time.

I'm still not voting for the guy, but I agree with his sentiments on this topic 100%.

You forgot to add all the "..."s in front of and behind his statement. You could also have "..."ed it to read the following: "I'm... concerned... with a safety net there... they're doing just fine... I'm... the... heart..." Whatever you do keep "..."ing to turn generally normal statements into outrageous things. GO TEAM!
