Keira Knightley's Domestic Violence PSA Is Too Brutal For British TV

The ad, created for the U.K. charity Women's Aid, has officially been pulled from British television screens.  Allegedly inspired by Rihanna, the spot features a glamorous and obviously affluent Knightley getting slapped, punched, and kicked by a male figure.

Apparently the domestic violence featured is too violent for TV.

That last 20 seconds has been deemed "too shocking for TV audiences" by Clearcast, a British company responsible for the clearance of UK advertisements.  Women's Aid disagrees.

Women's Aid has already stepped forward to defend the ad and its graphic imagery and to denounce the ruling.

"We were very careful to reflect what we had heard from anecdotal evidence," charity spokeswoman Lucy Brown said, adding that the charity has succeeded in raising public awareness and has had a strong, positive response to the spot.

Until that last bit is edited, the PSA is only available on the Women's Aid website and youtube.

Although the scenes are somewhat shocking, we would argue that the campaign could go even further, showing the effects of Keira's ass whooping, following her glam character as she tries to go about her day with bruised ribs and a wrecked face. Yes, the spot is graphic. We're just not sure it's graphic enough.

This is another advert typical of Britain's current slew of graphically brutal scenes including people dying in car accidents, strokes, and the like. This advert is no more shocking than the others, and what are they trying to achieve? Movies with this type of scene in them have ratings, but it looks like the media in Britain still has the monopoly over what they believe we should see. This type of advert brings absolutely no benefit whatsoever, still less to the people who find themselves in these situations.
