Danielle Schwartz, fashion designer

What's the most expensive item of clothing you own?

Probably a Temperley London dress, but I worked there, so I didn't pay for it. As far as stuff I own, I buy a lot of vintage. So maybe a pair of old Chloe booties that were around $800.

Since you're a fashion designer, what's the range of pricing for your garments?
My garments are on the higher end side, so the clothes are anywhere from $300 to $600 and the accessories are leather, so they're about $400 to $1000.

What makes more-expensive clothes worth the extra money?

My accessories are all handmade and the material is all scavenged by hand, so it's really high-end pieces of leather I've found, rather than bought in a fabric store. Then I craft them by hand.

Jacket: Ya Ya, belt and shoes: vintage, dress: ALC

Gawd, some people don't have $6000 to spend on clothes and still look terrible.

I'd like to see some diversity Hooksexup, not just pretentious New York hipsters.

Ugh! Hipsters.

again...here's the problem with labeling them hipsters AN. If the feature was about thrifty clothes...you still probably would have labeled them hipsters....ultimately any person who is from an urban/metropolitan environment, cares about how they look, and/0r identifies with a certain culture(punk, hip-hop, indie, goth, etc) is gonna be hipster...also what's the alternative? entry-level young professional? cancun frat-bro? no offense to those cultures, but if you want to see them highlighted visit barstoolsports.com...

yeah I wouldn't say hipsters, maybe just assholes who overspend on items they don't need to. Heard of the Salvation Army, Housing Works or even fucking Loehmann's? Although me like Jee So. Jee's So down to earth it seems.

I'll agree that the theory of hipster relativity is in full force here: basically anyone that looks slightly "weirder" than you do, be it a Wilco-worshipping alt-folker or a neon-Ray Ban and tank top wearing Williamsburgite, basically gets labeled a hipster in this day and age.
That being said, this many zeroes don't belong in an article called "price points". I get that it's a sampling, but $800 dollars per shopping trip? that's almost my rent.

i agree, startmakingsense. i've grown tired of Hooksexup readers calling anyone who doesn't look like they shop at j. crew a hipster. it's lazy, at best.

Now see, I totally thought 'hipster' with Cliff and Nina. The others, not so much. Cliff screams stereotype. The 'trendy' glasses, slippers-as-shoes, rolled cuff cords, v-neck, scruffy stubble sort-of formed into the ironic goatee, chunky necklace, AND he works at a juice bar? Definitely trying-too-hard hipster.
And Nina - any 20-something who wears Grandma's high-necked dress but 'pairs it with some kicky boots (posed pigeon-toed, of course) to give it a touch of sass' and does the 70's hippie middle part on otherwise uninspiring hair, clutching an oversize bag giving her best trout-pout , bragging about a Chanel dress she spent Six Thousand Dollars on is a HIPSTER. Get over it.

"Retard", seriously? Are you eight? Let's have a little compassion for people with developmental disabilities, mmkay? You wouldn't call my brother that to his face so don't post it online.

as someone who sports the 'retard chic' look i take exception to your comparison of retard-chicers to people with developmental disabilities. 'people with gender-based fashionable impairments' would be more pc.

I've never understood paying that much money for an item of clothing. But, to each his/her own.

I do think Jee So looks extremely cute! I love her style.

Danielle is a smarty... she goes to thrift stores, buys cheap old clothes, uses them for materials, and sells them at a huge markup. Hate all you want, but she sounds like she's got a good head for business.

I absolutely love Danielle's look. Well, granted - the dress is too long, but otherwise it's lovely. I especially like the flared-arm pea coat. Together with her gorgeous hair, it all works.

I wouldn't have paid $6,000 or even $600 for that dress!

Maybe it was originally $6K retail, but at a vintage shop? I suspect there's some truth-stretching going on.

I was really excited to check this out, as these street style blogs often lead me to wonder if New Yorkers have thrifty shopping/styling techniques, or if they just have money to blow on high-end items as one would expect. According to this sampling, it appears the latter is true. What a MASSIVE FREAKING DISAPPOINTMENT. (Except for Jee So. She rawks.)

Apr 20 11 - 7:03pm
Dea

How does a guy who manages a juice bar have that much money to spend on clothes? Not knocking his job or anything, but I've done similar work at earlier points in my life, and he's probably making around 40K, give or take.

As some people already remarked, I would have mistaken Andrew for being homeless if I saw him on the street.

Anyway, most of the people in this feature appear to be having fun with fashion, whatever the price point (or whatever my personal opinion of how it looks). That's good since you may as well have fun with something if you have to do it every day... I've always thought getting dressed was like painting a new picture every day.

Amen! I'd do some of those things too with six grand to spare.

Holy fucking hell, I call my $25 hot pink pumps my "expensive shoes," because that's the most I've ever paid for a pair.

I live in goddamn West fucking Virginia and I constantly get designer stuff at Goodwill: Betsey Johnson, Ralph Lauren, Dolce Vita, Zac Posen, etc. Plus there's always some sweet vintage to be had at estate sales. No excuse for spending so much money on apparel.

Apr 20 11 - 10:57pm
Dude,

Are we sure Andrew wasn't just homeless?

Apr 21 11 - 10:10am
KellyBourdet

He definitely wasn't homeless. He's actually worked in fashion in the past. He's just an eccentric guy. I wanted to include a portrait of style that is extremely unique and eclectic, but wouldn't garner the "hipster" accusations I receive so often.

Apr 21 11 - 12:58pm
AlexT

"He's not homeless, he's crazy!" Not the most convincing counterpoint. But it is an interesting subtext to an article that showcases people whose outfits look increasingly homeless/crazy, culminating in the stylings of an actual "eccentric." Oh, but it's not schizoid, it's fashion, because the shirt cost $300. Yeah, that must be it.

Apr 21 11 - 3:41pm

Looking at Andrew, I'm guessing that, on this particular day, therapy needs were probably winning over sartorial..?

Kelly Bourdet...can we bother you for some more savvy 'tools of attraction' exposé like this.

It's very interesting to see how much the hipster proclaimer is willing to spend.

All I can see when I look at Danielle is her skirt.. dragging on the ground... thinking of alllll the dirt and grossness of the ground.

Although I don't know their personal situations, I somehow get the feeling that these people are New York's equivalent of people in Los Angeles who drive BMW's but live in low rent apartments with roommates. All show. No substance.
