Vance Joy is going to make you sway. The Australian indie-pop singer-songwriter finds his inspiration from a patchwork of cultural moments: his stage name is from a Peter Carey novel, he gets ideas from Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, he references Midnight Cowboy in lyrics. That’s probably why the quick strum of his ukulele and the texture of his vocals sounds so full of life.
You probably recognize his smooth honeyed voice from his incendiary, foot-tapping hit “Riptide” and his accompanying debut album Dream Your Life Away. It was just announced that Vance will be supporting none other than Taylor Swift on her 1989 world tour later this year. So we’ve got a good hunch this isn’t the last we’ll hear from this infectious voice. Hooksexup was lucky enough to have Vance Joy join us for his very own sultry edition of Five Albums this week.
You can trust a guy who will dance to Purple Rain in front of a mirror. — Hooksexup

Love the overlapping melodies that appear throughout the album.
Listen to: “Nara” – The outro in this song is killer.

Great moody songs that make me feel like I’m on dark streets after a bit of rain.
Listen to: “Trouble”
Prince – Purple Rain
This song is epic at the end. His screaming is incredible and spine tingling. And it’s great to mime in front of a mirror. The album is filled with treats like this song and amazing songwriting and bizarre, amazing sounds.
