By now you've probably heard of Representative Chris Lee of New York's 26th District — he's the one who resigned yesterday after Gawker published a series of Craiglist correspondences he had with a woman in which he claimed he was divorced (not true) and sent her some topless shots (shameful fact: I'd hit that). Unfortunately for Rep. Lee, even more bits of his past are coming back to bit him in the ass, like this op-ed piece he wrote in 2009, warning kids about how the internet can be a dangerous place and you shouldn't share your personal information online. The choicest bit:

At the same time, responding to what may seem like a friendly e-mail or an appealing marketing offer can have serious consequences. Private information and images can so easily be transmitted to friends and strangers alike.

Ouch. The rest, in truth, is mostly about passing legislation to require schools to educate students about said dangers, and therefore is not as ironic and hilarious. I know that lots of people don't follow their own advice, but seriously, this is just painful. The guy used his real name and email address! And never include your face in a sexy picture! That's, like, internet hook-ups 101.

Discussion time, readers: what do we think of stories like this one? For me, while I believe your sex life has little to no impact on your job performance (depending on whether or not your sex life ends in a prison sentence), I do think it's important to note that Lee was strongly in support of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, which basically determined... your job performance based on your sex life. More or less: don't put my shit on blast, I won't put yours.

The one lesson that conservatives simply cannot seem to learn; "what you resist will persist".

As Dan Savage says, your sex life has nothing to do with your job performance... until you make it your job to try to control the sex lives of others. Then it's fair game.

nothing wrong with republicans or democrats having affairs, sending pornographic pictures, etc., as long as they never lie about it. happy to vote for anyone who's completely honest about their activities.
