"We are the 99 percent" is Yale's quote of the year

We are the 99 percent

Yale University has taken a break from assembling its smoking jacket-and-pricey-scotch alumni packages to bring us the top quotes of 2011. Occupy Wall Street managed to beat out anything about tiger blood, claiming the number one spot with its "We are the 99 percent" mantra.

Occupy Wall Street was joined by the likes of Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Steve Jobs, and, yes, Charlie Sheen on Yale's list. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you 2011, in sound-bites:

  • "We are the 99 percent." -Slogan of the Occupy movement

  • "There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. You built a factory out there — good for you! But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces the rest of us paid for." -U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren

  • "My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress." -Warren Buffet

  • "I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy." -Jon Huntsman, in a tweet

  • "Oops." -Rick Perry, failing to remember the third federal agency he'd eliminate

  • "When they ask me, 'Who is the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan?' I'm going to say, 'You know, I don't know. Do you know?' -Herman Cain

  • "I am on a drug. It's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available because if you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body." -Charlie Sheen

  • "Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow." -Steve Jobs, in his last words

  • "I can't say with certitude." -Anthony Weiner, when asked whether a certain photo was actually of him

  • "Instead of receiving the help she had hoped for, Mr. Cain instead decided to provide her with his idea of a stimulus package." -Lawyer Gloria Allred, on Cain's alleged sexual harassment of her client

Overall, Yale summed up the year pretty well with its list. But if we're including tweets like Huntsman's, I'm baffled as to how Adam Scott's, "Loud crunch from kettle corn is making me miss dialogue on The Good Wife. Sometimes life grabs you by the balls and won't fucking let go" didn't make the cut.

Isn't the 99% in the USA anyone who makes less than $700k? Of course they can afford a Lobbyist. It's not about winning remember, it's about making the other person lose.

it is about half a million dollars in cash income, but net worth shows a much more drastic income disparity.

"According to an analysis of Federal Reserve data by the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal research organization, the top 1 percent of Americans by net worth hold about a third of American wealth."

The wealth in the US is not evenly distributed. That is why movements like OWS are getting so much attention and Buffet, a billionaire, is asking to be taxed more.

Perhaps but what I don't get is that if Buffet and those who agree with him think they are not being taxed enough, why aren't they simply paying the Treasure more than what they owe?

While he's at it, BH could pay its back taxes.

The list wasn't from Yale University but Fred Shapiro who is an Associate Librarian at Yale. As a matter of official policy, I don't think Yale would be quite so vocal about wealth disparity. Yale's endowment of nearly $20B and annual tuition/expenses of $53k makes it the poster child for the 1%.

Ad hominem attack is a great way to avoid whether the contention is correct or not.
You are such an asshole.

Show me the ad hominem attack and I might concede your point. You'll notice I did not attack Mr. Shapiro by, for instance, calling him a liar nor was there any attack against him.

You might want to look up what the term means before using it, Liar.
