Many gay men are stylishly fabulous in life. Why should they be buried in the ground any other way? Mike Konigsfeld and Tom Brand, a gay couple from Cologne, Germany, have designed coffins that appeal to a certain gay aesthetic. The coffins feature homoerotic artwork on the outside and a variety of luxuriously plush interiors. This isn't death, it's eternal beauty sleep.
According to Konigsfeld, it's not just about leaving this world in style. It's about meeting a demand for tackier casket options in a tough economy:
"Naturally there were some people who threw their hands up in horror when we had them on display in the window, but they are tasteful and beautiful - like our customers. People are cutting back in the recession but the one group of consumers who still have high spending power are gay couples, and very few people are designing for them in this market."
Despite the naked men frolicking on the outside, I think these designers are selling themselves short. Plenty of straight people with a taste for the ornate and ostentatious could also appreciate these death digs. Or maybe I've been watching too many Mafia movies.
