New study suggests bisexuality is real
By Kelly BourdetAugust 22nd, 2011, 9:15 pmComments (23)New research contradicts old research in today's continuing medicalization of sexuality. Ever since 2005 — when researchers at Northwestern University published findings suggesting that bisexuality in men was likely a way for gay men to avoid completely embracing their sexual orientation — men who do feel attracted to both genders might have been understandably confused.
But now some other scientists, also from Northwestern, have published a new study that suggests that bisexuality does, in fact, exist. Sorry, bi-dudes, for that six year period where you questioned your entire experience of the world! In the more recent study, researchers more carefully vetted bi-identified participants; they had to have had sexual experiences and dating relationships with individuals from both genders.
In the study, men had their nether regions hooked up to a boner-detecting device and were shown pornography involving two men having sex and then two women having sex. It was scientifically proven that self-professed bisexual men experienced boners during both types of pornography, while gay men experienced no substantial increased blood flow during the lady-sex. So, there you have it, bisexual men of the world. You are validated. Now when is someone going to research female bisexuality, so assholes will stop telling bi women they're "doing it for the attention?"

Am I the only one who thinks the methodology, as described, is idiotic?
Yes.
No, you're not. I consider myself straight, but I could see getting a boner from gay porn.
As I have it understood, the methodology entails measuring the level of sexual arousal by monitoring the level of blood flow to the penis, i.e., how much wood the woodchuck can chuck. By showing same-sex porn, researchers should be able to pin-point if males and/or females sexually arouse the subject as heteroporn has the confounds of mixed genders.
As for a straight guy - emphasis on the modifier - getting a boner from gay porn, you're probably just experiencing arousal by viewing penile sexual attention.
The problem with testing bisexual women in a similar study is that women get "wet" for all sorts of reasons and when exposed to all different kinds of stimuli (hell, sometimes no stimulus at all), even though they profess to not feeling aroused. (Read it in "Bonk" by Mary Roach)
In a scientific study blood flow to the genitals would be measured in a woman, not wetness.
Anyone who denies that bisexuality is "real" is simply a fucking moron. Case closed.
Of corse it's real. The only debate is, as always, are you born bi or is it a result of external influences? I'm sure that there factors of which I'm unaware that make me attracted to certain types of women which aren't determined by my genetic code. that's all I'm going to say in terms of the born/ not born that way argument. Feel free to bash me; I always enjoy watching everybody here get in a twist.
k
Both. Some people are born gay or bisexual, and some people do not experience it until later in life. Gay until proven straight though I say
Is this like how there's still debate over the existence of the g-spot? Fuck science, these are real people and they don't need or want to be validated by science.
But what if we can find out with science how to fuck better? And clearly the participants in the study don't mind being studied.
...this study's results are possibly skewed by those individuals who happen to get aroused by having a 'boner-detecting device' hooked up to their junk.
i'm relieved that something legit like A BONER-DETECTING DEVICE cleared up any confusion. suggesting that sexuality can be reduced to how a person responds to a porno is degrading and not at all "validating." how pretentious are these scientists to try and present this as well-rounded and conclusive research? only a fool would accept this horribly over-simplified study as credible.
This is the same tech they use to test suspected pedo's. It's considered the most reliable method, 'cause a man's dick may be the only entirely honest part of his whole body.
You probably think the study is over-simplified because you read it paraphrased on a blog.
But yeah, why the fuck do people need science to validate people's sexuality.
So if you masturbate, then you're a bisexual?
While sexual stimulus is a hell of a lot more complex than "do you get a boner from watching Porn A, B, or C" (what if the chosen porn was simply shitty?); I think the people criticizing the study's methodology are missing the point.
This study was important because it overturned the 2005 study, using essentially the same methodology. The apparent problem with the 2005 study was the vetting process and the sample pool. This more current study proved that the 2005 study was flawed, and that's the most important result.
A "boner-detecting device", otherwise known as eyes.
Isn't sexuality on a continuum like Freud said a billion years ago? How hard is that to accept?
I'm trisexual.
I'm more perplexed by the idea that people didn't/don't believe bi-sexuality exists? I mean I feel like it makes more sense to have people existing somewhere in the "grey area" than it does to be either straight or gay. I mean people might affiliate with either or as a simplification process based on preference. For instance, I guess for the most part I am straight, but I have had relationships with women and do often find them sexually attractive. I associate with being straight b/c I would prefer to be in a committed relationship and have a family with a man...Bitches by crazy! even if you do double your wardrobe.
I fuck people. I play with whatever plumbing God gave them.
Now you say something
