Johnny Depp says Disney was scared of his "gay" Captain Jack Sparrow

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp reveals that the higher-ups at Disney absolutely hated the way he played the (now iconic) Jack Sparrow — and one reason was because the Captain seemed too gay. (Well, Disney, he was a pirate after all. Not many women on the high seas, you know what I'm saying?) Of course, Depp is not the kind of person who would let such things slide:

I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, "He’s ruining the movie"... Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, What’s wrong with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?… And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… "But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?" Which really made her nervous.

Why do I get the feeling that if anyone would believe this (demonstrably untrue) claim that it would be an executive at Disney? It makes you wonder if these people had even read the script at that point, in which it's perfectly clear that Sparrow has had his way with all sorts of lusty dock-women. You can see Depp as Sparrow again — romancing Dame Judi Dench, even! — when Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides comes out next year.
