Willie Nelson faces jail time after umpteenth pot bust

Willie Nelson smoking weed

The man who smoked pot on top of the White House is now known as the man busted for smoking weed on his tour bus -- again.

Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of marijuana while riding on his tour bus for the second time this year, and the latest charge could land him in the slammer. The five-o say they found the ganj on the seventy-seven-year-old touring warhorse when they stopped the Honeysuckle Rose near a border checkpoint in El Paso. Willie was on his way from California to — of course — Austin, Texas, and quickly posted the $2,500 bond.

What kind of asshole cop arrests Willie Fucking Nelson? And for marijuana? You can never live down something that stupid. Now, thanks to this/these jerks, Willie faces 180 days in jail.

Nelson has long dodged drug busts in Texas, as evidenced by his staple song "Me And Paul":

Almost busted in Laredo,
But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose,
But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave,
Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes.

The check point outside El Paso is controlled entirely by assholes. I go through it at least twice a year. They try to bust the hell out of anyone who looks hippy-ish and anyone who is even a little brown. Now and then they give me a cursory glance and ask a few questions. The last asshole nearly jumped out of his skin when I said I was on my way to my Catholic college and immediately let me through. I don't get it. As far as I can tell, it would be the easiest check point to smuggle shit across as long as you're white and wearing a cross.
I can also say as someone who's been working with and studying dogs for a number of years, their drug dogs are really poorly trained and aren't cared for very well. If I hadn't seen them trying (violently) to get a confused and poorly trained pup to cue a hit once, I would suspect they aren't even real drug dogs.

If he's traveling from CA to TX, why does he need to stop at a border checkpoint in the first place? Is there some shortcut thru Mexico? Or is this a NM/TX border checkpoint? As for the drugs: you would think that after all those years on the road, he would know better.

There's a checkpoint to leave the El Paso area on the I-10 bound in either direction. It's not on a border, it's just a checkpoint in the middle of the desert. It's not so much a "border" check point as a "we want to make sure you're not smuggling people from over the border" check point.

INS checkpoints on the northbound highways and byways of America - America's actual border. America has ceded the territory south of that to Mexico. The first time I encountered on of those INS checkpoints, I found it rather amusing that there were two "borders". The "official" one, and another, some miles north of the actual border, staffed by INS and other agents of America. Absolutely hilarious.

All the check points are a joke in the middle of no where. Move them to the border where the people can actually do some good and protect the border. At leaset they stopped a wild and crazy pot smoking person. We are really proud of the INS NOT

He should just stay out there in Hawaii, playing cards and chess with Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson.

El Paso is a huge port for drug and arms running which supports the drug syndicates in Mexico.
Now, if only those INS checkpoints were staffed by intelligent, well-balanced, and thoroughly trained individuals run by competent agencies with reasonable priorities. As it is, they're just more "security" theater.
